This course is intended  for experienced summer hillwalkers. It provides a structured introduction to the skills needed to undertake the classic ridges and scrambles of Scotland. We cover self-arrest using an ice-axe; movement on steep ground using ice-axe & crampons; assessment of avalanche risk; & navigation on winter hills.

The southern  pinnacles of Spidean Coire nan Clach, Beinn EigheAlso covered is basic rope-work skills, such as tying on; movement with a partner or group whilst roped - ieThe Forcan Ridge, Glen Sheil, leading onto the Saddle. 'short - roping'; belaying on snow, & rope-work skills needed for the ascent of simple grade one gullies.

Typical days might be the traverse of Liathach, including the pinnacles, or the Forcan Ridge in Glen Shiel. We might climb grade one gullies such as Deep South gully between the Horns of Beinn Alligin, or the Access Gully in Coireag Dubh Mor on the northern side of Liathach, leading up to the top of Spidean a'Choire Leith, the highest peak of Liathach.
